Answers To Your

FAQs

Where is your train departing from?

Trains depart from our Elbe Depot, located at 54124 Mountain Highway E, Elbe, WA 98330.

Is the museum in Mineral open to the public?

Our museum is not quite ready for the public, as it is very much a work site, with many active railroad restoration projects in process. The railroad and logging museum will open in a limited capacity for our Whiskey Tasting Trains, and occasionally, by special arrangement (email us at info@wfim.org).

Our long range plans include construction of a new museum in Eatonville, to house our vast collection of steam locomotives and logging equipment, while incorporating local Nisqually Heritage and stories of the logging camps told through the lends o the human experience. with a historical focus on the logging equipment, feats of engineering, and ingenuity that helped navigate the challenging terrain of the rural west coast, told in a wider and more inclusive context.

Is the train ADA accessible?

We board through our wide open baggage car doors, via a wheelchair lift. Restrooms in our baggage car are ADA accessible. Due to the historic nature of our equipment, the doors on our passenger cars are not wide enough to accommodate many wheelchairs at 27” wide. Our baggage car has large open doorways (with a safety fence), and guests are welcome to enjoy the views and ride from inside the car.

Yes, there are two restrooms aboard the train – both in the baggage car, located in the middle of our train consist.

How do I pick up my tickets, can I just show the confirmation email on my phone?
No printing at home is required, but you must have a ticket (not boarding pass, which is simply confirmation of purchase) for the conductor to punch onboard the train! All passengers must check in at our will call booth prior to departure time, where we will confirm your party’s reservation and hand you your pre-printed souvenir tickets. Whether you booked online or by phone, your ticket will be punched onboard by the conductor or brakeman just as they have done since 1882.

Yes! Our baggage car is retrofitted as a gift shop with a small snack and concession area. We offer soda, bottled water, and a variety of individually wrapped snack items.
Which locomotive will be pulling the train?
Most excursions will be pulled by Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad’s Polson Logging No. 70, a 70-ton 2-8-2 “Mikado” type steam locomotive, built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1922 for the Polson Logging Company.

Upon occasion, the Polson 70 may need unscheduled maintenance. During these times, Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad may elect to substitute a diesel engine for motive power.

Will you be offering any holiday-themed rides, like The Polar Express Train Ride this year? What about other themed events?

Unfortunately, we won’t be able to offer any holiday-themed events in 2023. We just assumed ownership of the railroad and while we’re a scrappy and small nonprofit, we’re working on building back a business structure that can support larger events like the railroad has operated in the past. Rest assured, we miss them as much as you do and are working towards a full event calendar in 2024. Keep an eye on our website and social media channels for updates!
